William Phillip Siebecker 1846-1929

*Formally Ida Adele Siebecker’s page*

Ida Adele Siebecker is my (Heather) Great-Grandmother and my grandpa, Carroll William Rollins “Pat” Pattison’s mother. Her story is mainly featured under her husband Frank Arthur Pattison. I am so excited to finally find her middle name in 2023, Adele! I will start the Siebecker family with Ida’s father William Phillip Siebecker.

~~1840~~

William Phillip Siebecker was born on November 1, 1846, in Waldeck, Germany, to parents Heinrich Wilhelm Siebecker 1819-1899 and Wilhelmine Christiane Graf Siebecker 1823-1876.

~~1850~~

When William Phillip Siebecker was young he came to America with his family from Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany, on the ship The Elizabeth Hamilton. They arrived on October 1, 1851, at either Castle Garden or Ellis Island. When I visit there in the future, I will check. It’s been said that they left Germany after the Revolutionary Disturbance of 1848.

~~1850~~

On October 1, 1951, William Siebecker Sr brought his family to Sauk County, Wisconsin, eventually buying land in the town of Sumpter. You can see where their land was on the map in Section 3 near the number 6 or in Section 4 between 8 & 9.

William’s land in section 9 near the river below

~~~~~
Future wife of William Siebecker, Henretta Franziska “Francis” Schwartz, was born on September 11, 1856, in Baraboo Wisconsin (this is an older picture).
In this 1860s census, we see William’s parents William and Christine living in Kingston, Sauk County, Wisconsin. William Sr is farming and has a farm worth $8,000. In today’s money that’s about $302,000. Louise, William, Charley, Fredrick, and Christine were attending school in Kingston. It looks like George 60, and William 64, at the bottom, maybe William Sr brothers, uncles, or father? I haven’t researched that far yet.
~~1870~~
On October 19, 1873 (Contracted Date) or November 9, 1873 (Certificate Date), William Phillip Siebecker married Miss Henrietta Franziska “Frances” Schwarz from Baraboo, Wisconsin, in Sauk County, Wisconsin. Witnesses were William and Francis’s uncles, Wilhelm Graf and Freidrich Schwarz.
~~~~~

William 30, and Francis 18, welcomed their firstborn son, William David Siebecker on January 7, 1875, in Merrimac Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin.

~~~~~
William 32, and Frances 20, welcomed baby number two, Clara C Siebecker on October 18, 1877, in Sauk County Wisconsin. My prediction of her middle name is Christiane based on how all the women in the family were naming their daughters. If anyone has a picture of Clara or knows her actual middle name, I would love to add it.
~~~~~

William and Frances welcomed their second daughter and third born Alvina Caroline Siebecker on January 21, 1879, in Sauk County, Wisconsin

When Alvina was born William was 34 years old and Frances was 22 years old

~~1880~

The 1885 Wisconsin state census is very limited in information. We know that only William was born in Germany. I’m not sure how they added Ida as one of the counted females as this was taken in June and she was born in July.

~~~~~
William and Frances welcomed daughter number three and fourth born Ida Adele Siebecker on July 5, 1885, in Merrimac, Sauk Co, Wisconsin. Ida is my (Heather) Great Grandmother.
Ida age 6 and Alvina age 12 had perfect school attendance
Ida, her sisters, and their brother William could possibly be in this late 1890s District 3 school picture.
Clara, Alvina, and Ida attend a party for William Brant. Also in this newspaper clip, are a few relatives of the girls, the Graff and the Eschenbachs.
Because of a fire in 1921, most of the 1890 census reports were destroyed. This is the first federal census report we see of Ida. The family is living in Merrimac, Sauk County, Wisconsin. William and Frances have been married for 43 years. Ida’s father and brother are farming, and her mother is at home. Clara 23, and Alvina 21, are out of school. Ida 15, is attending school.
A license has been issued to William David and Miss Elsie Stocker to wed.
~~~~~

William David married Miss Elsie Stocker, daughter of Adam and Dora Stocker, of Switzerland, on September 11, 1901, in Sauk City, Wisconsin. The wedding was held at the Rights of Reformed Church. Witnesses were Lorenz Keller, Alvina Siebecker, Albert Stocker and Anna Graf. Another important bit of info, William David is a dentist in Wisconsin.

William and Elsie would have three children

~~~~~
Mr. Frank Arthur Pattison 22, from Lodi, Wisconsin, married Miss Ida Adele Siebecker 18,
on April 20, 1904, in Evansville, Indiana. Ida and Frank would have five children together,
Frank Arthur Jr 1906-1995,
Robert Marion 1910-1998,
Edith Ida 1911-1984,
Carroll William Rollin “Pat” Pattison 1914-2000,
and Shirley Alice 1917-2007.
Ida’s uncle, Robert George Siebecker, was a prominent Chief Justice of Wisconsin. He will have a page under Siebecker in the future. Robert was married to Josephine La Follette. Josephine’s brother, Robert “Fighting Bob” La Follette will also have his own page. Check them out as they were very influential in Wisconsin and Washington DC.
~~~~~

This picture of Ida with niece Dorothy (William David and Elsie’s daughter) was taken in January 1904.

~~~~~
In this 1905 Sauk, Merrimac County Wisconsin census we see William 59, is still farming and has Charles Scharar 28, as his farm hand. Frances 48, is listed as a Domestic (homemaker). Clara 28, and Alvina 26, are at home.
~~~~~

Miss Clara Siebecker married Mr. Charles Frederick Graf on February 10, 1909, in Sauk County, Wisconsin.

Clara and Charles would have three children:

Lee Carl 1912-1947,

Herbert Carl 1917-1999

Charles Louis “Carl” 1922-2007

~~~~~
Frank and Ida Pattison moved to Lewistown, Fergus County, Montana.
Frank would get a job at the Lewiston Brewery where he was the refrigeration engineer around 1908 before prohibition was instated in 1920. Ida worked at the brewery as a bookkeeper.
~~~~~

Miss Alvina Caroline Siebecker 30, married Mr. Carl Eschenbach 27, of Merrimack Wisconsin, on October 10, 1909, in Merrimack Wisconsin. It looks like it was a quiet wedding. Carl and Alvina would have two children together,

Florence Frances 1911-1994 and

Phillip Charles 1913-1994

These are the family’s 1910 census reports. Only a couple errors but nothing major. We can see that everyone is still in Wisconsin except for Frank and Ida who are in Montana. Charles and Alvina live next door to William and Frances. William and Frances have four grandchildren so far. William David and Elsie have a border staying with them along with Elsie’s brother Albert.

~~~~~
Frank, Ida, Robert “Marion”, Edith Ida, and Frank Aurthur Pattison Jr circa 1912
I love a good family portrait.
~~~~~

William and Frances celebrated their 40th anniversary with many friends and family.

Sounds like fun was had.

~~~~~
I love this photo so much! William and Frances’s grandchildren Frank “Arthur” Jr, Marion, Edith, and Carroll “Pat” Pattison. Oh, my grandpa’s (Pat) smile. When he wasn’t grumpy, he had the best smile. This picture was pre-1917.
~~~~~

This is Frank “Arthur” Jr at roughly 10 years old (1916). I cannot imagine being able to send my 10-year-old over 1000 miles (probably by train) to visit their grandparents. That must have been quite the adventure for Frank Jr.

Ida’s parents William & Francis moved into this house in 1914. 745 Mound Street, Baraboo, Wisconsin. Here’s what it looks like now. It’s just missing all the ornate trim moldings. All of the barns and outbuildings are gone and now there are many houses on Mound Street.

~~~~~
William David and Elsie’s daughter Dorothy was on the 1918 basketball team.
~~~~~

This is William David’s 1918 Draft Register Card. These cards are great for information. We see that William is 43 years old. He is a self-employed Dentist in Maraton County Wisconsin. William is of medium height, slender build, blue eyes, and dark brown hair. We also see his handwriting and signature.

**Update, I found Ida and Frank’s divorce in the 1933 Lewistown Daily News. Yes, their middle initials are not accurate. It happens all the time. Ida says that Frank deserted the family on September 1, 1928. That makes sense as to why Ida sent Edith, Shirley, and Carroll “Pat” to Wisconsin.

6 years after Ida’s divorce from Frank Pattison, she married George Burns on November 22, 1933, in Hardin, Montana.

~~~~~
From the Hardin Tribune
April 3, 1936
Mrs. G.W. Burns Passes Away
Succumbs at Local Hospital Last Monday Night, Following an Eight Week Illness
After an illness lasting eight weeks, Mrs. Ida A. Burns, wife of George W. Burns, for the past ten years camp overseer for the Campbell Farming Corporation, died Monday night at ten o’clock at a local hospital. On January 25th Mrs. Burns was stricken with appendicitis at the Burns home at Camp 4 of the Campbell Farming Corporation, about 30 miles southwest of Hardin. Owing to the severely cold, stormy weather it was impossible to move her to a hospital at Hardin until February 11th, when she was operated on and it was discovered that the appendix had ruptured. Since that time she was critically ill, at times appearing better, then worse again, until death relieved her of her suffering. Mrs. Burns was born at Merrimac, Wisconsin, on July 5, 1885. She was twice married and by her first husband, T.A Pattison [sic], had five children, three sons, and two daughters, namely: Arthur Pattison of Lewistown, Montana, Robert Pattison of San Fransisco, California, and Carroll Pattison of Tacoma, Washington, and two daughters, Misses Edith and Shirley Pattison of Tacoma, Washington, all of whom-save the son Robert- with her husband, G.W. Burns, are here to attend the last sad rites. Mr. and Mrs. Burns were married at Hardin, on November 22, 1933. Funeral services will be held at two o’clock this Friday afternoon at the Bullis-Crilly funeral chapel. Rev. Fred C. Fulford, Pastor of Hardin Methodist Church, officiating. The interment will be in the Hardin cemetery. Mrs. Burns possessed many womanly virtues and was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She and her husband had a wide circle of friends who grieved at her taking away and who sympathized with the bereaved husband and children in their sorrow.
~
Mrs. Burns is related to some prominent people back in the home state of Wisconsin. She is the niece of Chief Justice Sibecker of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin and is also related to the La Follette family, who are well known in the political world. This community extends sympathy to the family in this hour of sorrow and bids them take comfort in the thought we lay away our loved ones in the quiet city of the of the dead with the fond christian hope of a glorious resurrection morning. The sentiment of the following poem suggest the same idea;
I know not where his islands (are?) Their fronded palms in the air. I only know I cannot drift beyond His love and care. And so, besides the silent sea, we wait the muddled oar No harm from Him can come to me. On ocean or on shore.
-Source Unknown
Funeral services were held at the Hardin Methodist Church, Rev. F.C. Fulford the pastor, officiating at two o’clock, Friday afternoon, March 27, 1936. Mrs. JJ Ping and Mrs. W.A. Ransier with Mrs. W.J Brekke accompanying on the piano sang three hymns. The pallbearers were M.R. Calderwood, C.A. Corkins, Frank S. Morrison, E.C. Kuehn, R.P. Ross, and Carl E. Bowman. Internment was in the Hardin Cemetery (now Fairview Cemetery).
The cause of death was Encephalitis- Infection of the brain. This might have had something to do with her ruptured appendix she suffered in January. Carroll “Pat” said that there was a terrible snowstorm and she thought she could wait until the weather got better to see a doctor. Very sad.
Ida’s children left to right Robert “Marion”, Edith, Shirley, and Carroll “Pat” Pattison(not pictured is Frank “Arthur” Jr).
According to her marriage announcement to Dean Rollins in 1937, she was a chemistry librarian. There were 25 pages in the packet from the US Embassy so I posted 8 of the ones I found most relevant. She is buried next to her husband at the Burr Oak Cemetery Burr Oak, Winneshiek County, Iowa,  F.A.G.# 147892038 Â· View Source
The Siebecker Family has been one of my favorite relatives to research. I will have a few more pages of the next generation done hopefully by Summer of 2025. Do you have any stories or memories of anyone on here you’d like to add? I am currently organizing into year two very large boxes of family pictures and Roller Skating memorabilia. My dad Larry Pattison and his cousin Gary Englund are digitizing 8mm plus other types of film. I have 8 videos uploaded to YouTube. Here is a link to one that has Carroll “Pat” Pattison in it https://youtu.be/O3EzZt1Bo7Y.
Thank you for reading. Let me know if you have pictures, stories, or favorite memories of anyone on this page.
-Family members in Bold have their own page on this website where you can find more about their story.
-F.A.G# are FindaGrave.com reference numbers if you to start your own virtual cemetery through their app.
-I find most of my information in State or County books, family genealogy books, libraries, Google searches, and personal stories and pictures given to me
I do this to preserve our family history for us and future generations. I  keep the website ad-free because who wants to see ads. I do take donations and I truly appreciate everyone who has donated so far. You know who you are 🙂 We have a Venmo set up now @Eric-Puryear-3 to make donations easier or there is a link on the top of the If The Genes Fit homepage.
Thank you again for reading and remember if you count back 10 generations, it took 2,046 people to come together at separate times in history just to make you!
  1. Lovely entries and photos. Judge Robert G. Siebecker is my Paternal Great Grandfather. I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and visited his gravesite and had the thrill of visiting three of his homesites as well as the Supreme Court room he presided in at the State Capital.
    • Hello, thank you so much! So glad you found my page. Not knowing any Siebeckers personally, I always hope this information will reach unknown families. My grandpa, CWR “Pat” Pattison was Robert’s great-nephew. I have spent a little time up in Wisconsin mainly going to the Dells. We would drive to the Sibecker and LaFollette houses every so often. I have visited the Sibecker gravesites at the Kingston Cemetery. I have always wanted to visit your Great Grandpas grave. It’s on my never-ending list. My grandpa would tell my dad stories of his famous Great-Uncles. I am always looking for more info on both Roberts for a future page of our family in Wisconsin Politics.
  2. I am SO excited to find Heather’s site as I also descend from family Siebecker on my paternal line. From what I assess we have in common my 2x great grandparents whose children were siblings, Heather’s William Phillip Siebecker and my gr-grandmother Ida (Siebecker) Isenberg born in Wisconsin on “Sauk Prairie” as W. P’s youngest sibling. They share amongst siblings “the Judge” who I grew up hearing tales of from my father. I recognized a lot of familiar names in all your fabulous research Heather. Also, I marveled at how so many names became well-used family names. I too have visited Sauk County, Wisconsin for relevant family sites and also Germany, “the motherland”. Thanks for all your fastidious efforts Heather! I very much enjoy genealogy but am not very accomplished. I have wondered about other Siebecker “cousins of sorts” out there!
    • Nice to meet you Siebecker cousin! I am actually working on the next generation of Siebecker’s with your Great Grandmother Ida. I’m hoping to have it done by the end of March. There is so much information on all the Siebecker’s I always want to include as much as I can. I am hoping to put together The “Judge” Robert and his brother in law “Fighting Bob” page in the near future too. There is so much information there too! I have a love of family history and US History so I try to mix the two in the family stories. I love visiting Wisconsin. Our favorite place to go in the winter is the Dells in Baraboo. Never understood why I loved it so much until I took a deep dive into the Siebecker’s and found out that’s where my great grandmother Ida Adele Siebecker Pattison was born. I’m pretty sure she was named after your great grandmother. If you have any family pictures or stories I would love to hear/see them and add them to the page. Thank you so much for reaching out and message me anytime! ~Heather Pattison Puryear
