Herbert and Ella were married on April 9, 1938, in Grant County, Washington.

Ben H. Winkler and Fred Witt are witnesses. Fred is Herbert and Ben’s stepbrother.

~1940 Census. The family is living at 315 N “G” Street Toppenish, Yakima County, Washington (the house is no longer there). Wolter had just turned 1. Herbert is 23 and Lucille is 20 years old. Herbert is working for the Northern Pacific Railroad Company. They are renting their house for $12.00. His income is listed at $1000. Lucille was living in Antelope County Nebraska on a farm in 1935 before she married Herbert (Side note- We just moved about an hour south of Antelope County Nebraska. Might have to go camping up there).

I (Heather) remember being told that Herb was my favorite babysitter. I always looked foward to seeing him when we visited Spokane. Such a sweet humble man.

~I got to say hi to Rose at the rink in Spokane a year before she passed away. I really wish I could remember what we talked about. She always had beautiful hair.
