This picture of George King Pattison was found in a 1978 letter from his great-granddaughter Evelyn Pattison-Billeaud to her sister Onalee A. Pattison-Jones. Handwriting on the reverse side is either Evelyn’s or her father Perry Dan Pattison.
George King Pattison was the sixth son of William and Sally [Boyce] Pattison,
born on August 11, 1811, in Fort Ann New York.

~~1810~~

I love investigating old census records. In this 1810 record, we see George King Pattison’s father William on the top red line, and his grandfather George on the bottom red line. This is George King’s first census and is one of the males listed under the age of 10. The families were living in Greenwich, Washington County, New York. Other notable last names in this census are the Boyces and Bakers.
~~1830~~

On April 23, 1838, at the age of 25, George King Pattison married
Lydia M Boyce of Fort Ann, New York, in New York
~~~~~
On May 28, 1839, George and Lydia welcomed their first child Edwin Arthur Pattison,
born in Fort Ann, New York.
This is the only picture I have of Edwin. He is the man standing. They are in front of the Hotel Kimball in Lodi, Wisconsin.
~~1840~~
On August 21,1841, George and Lydia welcomed their second son Augustus Monroe Pattison,
born in Jackson, Michigan.
It is possible that George had temporally moved or was visiting Jackson Michigan during the copper or agriculture boom. I’m not sure of his occupation in 1840, but in 1850 he was a Sawyer. Sawmen may have been needed to move trees to get to copper-rich areas in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was an easy place to visit thanks to the Erie Canal.
On an unknown date, George and Lydia welcomed their third son William L Pattison in 1845.
He was born in Shelby Township in Orleans County, New York.
Born 4th was George Abram Pattison, on July 31, 1849, in Shelby Township in Orleans County, New York.
~~1850~~
In this 1850 census, we see the family living in Shelby, Orleans County, New York. George is working as a Sawyer (woodworker). We see that George is 39, Lydia is 33, Edwin is 11, Augustus is 9, William is 5, and George is 1. Everyone was born in New York except Augustus, who was born in Michigan. Edwin, Augustus, and William are attending school.
On May 5, 1858, George and Lydia welcomed their fifth son Charles Melvin Pattison,
born in Alabama, Genesee County, New York.
~~1860~~
In this 1860 census, George and Lydia moved the family to Alabama, Genesee County, New York. George is farming alongside Edwin who is 21 years old. Willie and George are attending school. I’m wondering why the census worker marked that Willie and George cannot read or write? They would have been in school for over 10 years now. Charlie is 2. Augustus is 18 and was working as a farm laborer 35 dwellings away (pictured below) at the Webster farm.
Yes, that is a pink ribbon. George and Lydia welcomed a daughter
Hattie E. on January 7, 1861, in New York. George was 50 years old and Lydia was 44.
On December 10, 1867, George and Lydia’s oldest son Edwin Arthur marries
Mary Jane Rollins from St. Joseph, Missouri, in Cheyenne, Laramie County, Wyoming.
Josephine Rose “Rosa” 1876-1914,
Mary “Alice” 1878-1957,
Frank Arthur 1882-1958,
George Abram 1885-unknown,
Fred Leslie 1886-1969,
Charles Augustus 1889-1973
~~~~~

George and Lydia’s son Augustus Monroe married Addie Nimblet from Montpelier, Vermont,
on February 18, 1869, in Charles City, Iowa.

Together they would have three children;
Colonel Frank 1869-1924,
Perry Dan 1872-1958,
and Rollo Leaon 1876-unknown.
~~1870~~

In this very hard-to-read census, George, 57, is farming in the town of Windsor, Dane County, Wisconsin. His farm real estate is now worth $7,000 and his personal estate is worth $1,700 ($7,000 back then is about $160,000 today). Lydia, 53 is keeping house and raising William, 25, Charles, 12, and Hattie her only daughter, 9. They have a domestic servant from Norway named Lorana Lewis who is 18 years old.

>>>Update 5/2025 Just added. This is George King Pattison’s 80 acres in Dane County, Wisconsin. In 1873 this was enough acreage to be a self-sustaining farm.

On December 7, 1874, George Abram marries Flora R Winslow from Franklin, Maine,
in Trempealeau, Wisconsin.
George and Flora would go on to have three children;
Delbert Winslow 1875-1933,
Ada P “Addie” 1877-1880,
George Jay (Dr. DDS) 1878-1942

William L would marry Fredrica Mary “Rica” Ehrhard from Wisconsin, on September 3, 1878, in Olmstead, Minnesota.
They would go on to have one child, Clyde Russel 1881-1951
~~~~~
Listed at the bottom of this death report is George Abrahm. He passed away November 10, 1879, in Pleasant Grove, Olmstead Co., Minnesota, from Typhoid Fever. Sadly, a few months later their only daughter Ada “Addie” P., passed away from Typhoid Fever also. This must have been an extremely hard time for the family. George and Addie are the bottom two lines of the bottom picture.
~~1880~~
On January 8, 1880, Hattie L marries Justin Morris Harris in his hometown of
Pleasant Grove, Olmstead Co., Minnesota.
They would not go on to have any children.
~~~~~

Charles Arthur 1888-1971
Everett 1890- before 1890
Martin Melvin 1900-1988
Curtiss Leroy 1907-1957

In this 1885 Minnesota State census, we see William L, his wife Fredrica, their son Clyde, and his mother Lydia M Pattison. Not sure if Lydia was just there visiting or if she was there for other reasons?
~~~~~
In this Washington State Census of the Inhabitants of King County, July 1889, shows that William, 49, is working as a Policeman, Fredrica, 29, is at home, and Clyde, 8, is probably attending school.
~~~~~

On March 25, 1898, George King Pattison passed away from Paralysis at the age of 87 (not 67 like it says in the record) in Pleasantville, Olmstead Co, Minnesota.

And only a few months later on October 25, 1898, Lydia M passes away from Senile Debility at the age of 83. I am not sure of the exact burial location of George or Lydia. I cannot find either one on Find a Grave.com

Charles Melvin Pattison passed away on July 8, 1929, in Roberts, Montana. Looks like he died of heart disease and Dropsy. He was 71 years old and was working as a Rancher. His informant was his son Martin Pattison. Again we see another misprint on a headstone. This happens quite often.

~~1930~~

A little insight into Hattie’s life,
Justin Maurice Harris (Hattie’s husband) was born near Pleasant Grove, Minn., Aug. 12, 1857; and died Dec. 24, 1930, at the home of his nephew L. D. Harris, Simpson, Minn. His parents, Brother and Sister T. S. Harris, were pioneer members of the Seventh-day Adventist church. He joined the organization at Pleasant Grove at the age of seventeen and remained a faithful member until his death.
In January 1830, he was married to Miss Hattie E. Pattison. For several years Brother Harris was an invalid from rheumatism and the last year he was practically helpless, yet his hope was bright.
He is survived by his invalid wife, one sister, Mrs. Henry Tubbs at Stewartville, Minn., three nephews and eight nieces,
The funeral service was held at the home of his niece, Mrs. E. D. Sanborn, Stewartville, and the interment was in the family lot near Simpson. Appropriate remarks were made by Elder O. W. Wolfe, based on John 3:16. The male quartet from the Austin church sang three beautiful hymns.
It looks as though Hattie had been an invalid for a while.
~~1940~~

This is sad, 10 years later and Hattie is still an Invalid Inmate at the Anoka State Hospital Insane Asylum along with 1560 other women.

Hattie E Pattison Harris passed away on January 22, 1942, at the Anoka State Hospital at the age of 81.

If the state was in charge of her, with no next of kin, she was probably buried here at the Anoka State Hospital. I have this location saved on my to visit next list for Minnesota.
