Because most of the 1890 censuses were destroyed, this 1900 census is essential information. We see that Edwin, at 60 years old, is working as a horse trainer. Edwin and Mary rented their house in Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin. Mary Jane has had 9 children, and all 9 survived. Frank is 18 years old and working as a farm laborer. George, Fred, and Charles are all attending school. Mary’s mother, Louisa [Cook] Rollins Northcutt, is living with the family after being widowed in 1899.

On October 9, 1914, Carroll “Pat” William Rollins was born in Lewistown, Montana. I’m not sure where he got the name Carroll, but his middle name most likely comes from his paternal uncle or maternal grandfather, William. Rollins is his paternal grandmother’s maiden name. To me, he was Grandpa Pat.

When Frank “Arthur” Jr was 10 years old (1916), he spent 2 months at his grandparents Wilhelm and Frances Sibecker’s house in Baraboo, Wisconsin. He traveled back to Montana all by himself! Wow, how times have changed.
~~~~~
3 years later, an unnamed baby girl was born on February 2, 1917, to Frank & Ida, in Lewistown, Montana.
She would later be named Shirly Alice.
Story by Carroll
1918 This is the first Christmas I can remember. There were five children. I had two older brothers, an older sister, and a younger sister. We all went to bed early. Dad had gone to the forest to get our tree while we slept. Dad brought the tree in, and mom decorated it with popcorn and cranberries. Candles were added, and presents were put under the tree. Since Shirley was so young, she got to ride on Marion’s shoulders. Then I followed, then Edith, then my oldest brother Art (Frank Jr). When I got down the stairs, there stood the tree, all decorated and presents under the tree. I can remember getting a small wood wagon filled with wood blocks with letters and numbers painted on them. They helped me learn to count and learn the alphabet. I also received a Hershey bar and some almonds, and brazil nuts. They were in their shells so we had to crack them before we could eat them. This is the only Christmas I can remember at home in Montana.
Franks’s father, Edwin Arthur, passed away on August 1, 1919. He is buried in Lodi, Wisconsin, at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
This 1920 Census is the only one where the family is listed all together. The family is still living in Lewistown, Montana. Frank is a Stationary Engineer at the Lewistown Brewery. Carroll said his dad worked there, and his mother was the bookkeeper.
Frank was an outdoorsman. He loved to hunt. He brought home deer, bears, elk, snowshoe rabbits, and lots of rainbow trout from Spring Creek. He also did a lot of bird hunting. Canadian geese, grouse, and sage hen were plentiful in the 1920s
Frank’s mother, Mary Jane [Rollins] Pattison, passed away at 69 from pneumonia at her home in Lodi, Wisconsin. Her funeral included daughter Alice Wall with granddaughter Gladys, son Charles and Marguerite Pattison, daughter Dollie and Charles Stiles, and sons William and Frank. She is buried next to Edwin at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Lodi, Wisconsin.
Summer of 1920, Carroll (6 years old) spent the summer working at Pribyl’s Ranch near Roundup, Montana. He sent his mom a postcard. He earned .10 cents a day but recalls never seeing any of it. Carroll thinks Mr. Pribyl sent it to his mother as he never saw a cent of it. It still boggles my mind that he spent the summer working at 6 years old!!! If anyone knows more, please mail me.
~~~~~

I have never seen the Pattison name botched so bad. Made me giggle. Frank and Ida, along with little Shirly, visit her parents, Wilhelm and Frances Siebecker, in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Ida’s niece Florence was also visiting. Florence is ten years old here, and Shirly was six years old. Later on, Shirley would be a bridesmaid for Florence at her wedding.
~~~~~
Frank had a 1920 Ford Model T touring car. Since there wasn’t room for Carroll inside, he rode on the running board. His cushion was some gunny sacks. Carroll’s job was to open the gates and place a rock in front of the wheel when his dad had to back up some of the hills so the gas would get to the engine.
~~~~~

Circa 1924. Carroll and his friend Gordon Burt (on the left) made their own instruments. With a kazoo, rubber hose, and funnels.
Carroll said they made their own brand of music.
~~~~~
On this 1925-1926 Lewistown Directory, listed under Pattison, we see a Chas H (which, as of right now, is not related. Frank’s youngest brother is Charles A) Next, we have Frank A, an engineer at Lewiston Brewing Company, Ida A, a bookkeeper at Lewistown Brewery. Their address is 609 W Cook Street.
~~~~~

When Carroll was 13 (1927), his parents decided to divorce. Carroll, Edith, and Shirley went to live with Ida’s family in Wisconsin. They were there for 6-8 months, then returned to Montana. The next thing Carroll remembers is being at the Billings Fairgrounds, where Ida worked, and one day the Sheriff came and picked up the kids. Carroll then remembers working on a ranch east of Lewistown.
Frank and Ida divorced around 1927. If anyone has any information on this, please let me know.

Memories from Carroll “Pat” on growing up in Lewistown Montana
-Having the city park so close, I could skate in the winter and swim in the summer.
-Having Spring Creek so close, I could go fishing.
-Having the Judith Mountains so close, we could hike to the mountains and stay the night.
-Going out to Cottonwood to attend picnics on Sunday afternoons.
-Going to the Belk Mountains to look for silver and lead nuggets.
-Frank and Ida raised all of our vegetables. They also had Apple, plum, and cherry trees. They had current and gooseberry bushes. They also made homemade ice cream.
-The family had chickens and two cows. They kept them in a red barn behind our house.
-Carroll credits his living in Lewistown as a child, growing up in a small town, helping him attain his ambition after graduating from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington.
Do you have any photos or memories of Frank, Ida, Frank Jr, Marion, Edith, Carroll “Pat,” or Shirley Pattison?
