Edwin Arthur Pattison

(Father: George King Pattison 1811-1898)

(Mother: Lydia M Boyce 1817-1898)

(Spouse: Mary Jane Rollins 1851-1920)

~~1830~~

Edwin Arthur Pattison was born May 28, 1839, in Fort Ann, Washington County, New York.

He was the firstborn to George King Pattison and Lydia M Boyce.

When Edwin was born, Fort Ann had a population of 3200 people.

The 8th President, Martin Van Buren, was in office.

This Is the only close-up picture I have of Edwin at this time. The children on the wagon are unknown. The building behind him is the Hotel Kimball in Lodi, Wisconsin.

~~1850~~

Mary Jane Rollins was born on April 18, 1851, in St. Joseph, Buchannan County, Missouri, to Franklin True Rollins and Louisa Ann Cook. According to the 1900 census, Mary Jane was the only child born to her mother, Louisa.

When Mary Jane was 9 years, The Pony Express was founded in St. Joseph and had its first

successful mail run to Sacramento Califonia.

Notable people from St. Joseph, Missouri; Walter Cronkite, Rapper Eminem, Outlaw Jesse James, and 50+ others.

St. Joseph is north of Kansas City in a beautiful area of Missouri.

~~1860~~

In this 1860 census, Edwin is 21 and a farm laborer for his father George King Pattison’s farm in Alabama, New York. His mother, Lydia, raised 4 of 5 boys on the farm. Edwin Arthur is 21, Willie L is 15, George Abram is 11, and Charlie Melvin is 2.

Edwin’s younger brother, Agustus Monroe, is 18 living and working on Porter Webster’s farm in Alabama, New York.

~~~~~
Somewhere between 1860-1867, Edwin left New York and either met Mary Jane in St. Joseph, or they both ended up in Wyoming where they met and married. I’m still looking for the answers to that question.
Edwin Arthur 28, married Mary Jane Rollins 16, on December 10, 1867, in Cheyenne, Laramie Co, Wyoming Territory.
Edwin and Mary Jane were early pioneers of the Wyoming Territory.
The white light on the map shows the route they may have taken from St. Joseph to Wyoming. The red dot above Ft. Kearney is about where I am currently living.
The white lights on this map show the route for New York to Wyoming and beyond. That is the route Edwin most likely took in the 1860s. The Railroad also had trains that went down into Missouri.
This picture and the one above are from our visit to the Archway Museum in Kearney, Nebraska. It’s a dramatic structure that spans the width of I-80 at Exit 275. Definitely, a must-visit if you’re in the area.
~~~~~

Edwin and Mary Jane had their first daughter, Hattie Louise Pattison was born November 2, 1868, in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

She was the first recorded white child to be born in Cheyenne.

~~~~~
Around 1869, Edwin moved the family to Vienna Township, Doan County, Wisconsin. Farming was hard in the Midwest with severe winds, droughts, and the occasional tornado. Edwin must have felt the need to move the family for safety reasons or poor farming conditions. It’s a good thing he did. In 1874 a plague of locusts encompassed much of the midwest including Wyoming damaging over 2,000,000 square miles. Fortunately for the early Pattison’s the locust plague did not reach Wisconsin.
In this 1870 Census, the family had moved from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Vienna, Wisconsin. Edwin is a farmer. Edwin’s brother George Abram lived with the family and helped his brother on the farm.
*Census takers put down New Jersey as Edwin and George’s birthplace. They were both born in New York.
~~~~~

On December 22, 1870, William Pattison was born in Lodi, Wisconsin. William’s middle name most likely came from his mother’s maiden name. On his gravestone, his middle initial is “F,” but in other documents, I have also found it to be Rawlins and Rollins or “L.” Reference the picture below in the family Bible. “F” is scratched out, and Rollins was written. I might have to go to the Vital Statistics office in Lodi next time I’m in Wisconsin.

~~~~~
On July 6, 1873, Irene Lydia “Dollie” Pattison was born in Lodi, Wisconsin. I believe her given name was Irene (1880 Census).
In 1910 she listed herself as Dollie L.
~~~~~

Josephine Rose Amalind Pattison was born on February 15, 1876, in Lodi, Wisconsin (1880 census).

She would later drop Josephine and go by Rose or Rosa.

~~~~~
On May 5, 1878, Mary Alice Pattison was born in Lodi, Wisconsin (1880 census).
Like her two older sisters, she would drop Mary and go by Alice. Talk about confusing for research.
~~~~~

This notarized family record is where you can see some confusion about the Pattison children’s names. Edwin or Mary Jane told the census worker their children’s names in 1880. With all the girls changing their names, this notarized Family Bible is a good start for clarity. A very special thanks to my Aunt Bobbie W. for this information.

In this 1880 census, Edwin and Mary moved to Lodi, Wisconsin. Below is a picture of their farmhouse in Lodi.

They would go on to raise 9 children here.

Hattie, Willie, and Irene are all attending school in Lodi. Josephine and Alice are home.

Here we see the census taker wrote Willie’s middle initial as “L.” The only thing I can think of is that maybe Willie is named after his Uncle William L Pattison.

On March 30, 1882, Frank Arthur was born in Lodi, Wisconsin.

Frank was my Great-Grandfather, for reference.

~~~~~
In this 1885 Wisconsin State census, Edwin’s family has 4 males and 5 females in the house. Edwin 46, Mary Jane 34, Hattie 17, William 15, Irene 12, Josephine 9, Mary 7, and Frank 3. Mary Jane would give birth to George three months after this was recorded.
~~~~~

George Abram Pattison was born September 28, 1885, in Lodi, Wisconsin.

~~~~~
Fred Leslie Pattison was born July 13, 1886, in Lodi, Wisconsin.
(A picture of Fred is pictured below in 1910)
~~~~~

Charles Agustus Pattison was born ninth on August 24, 1889, in Lodi, Wisconsin.

~~1890~~

The Commerce Department building caught fire in 1921, destroying most of the 1890 census records. Thanks to the first responding firemen, a few records made it out.

~~~~~
Hattie Louise married George Archer Kimball in Lodi, Wisconsin, on April 20, 1892. Their witnesses were Hattie’s great aunt and uncle Arthur & Rose Boyce, who were married two years before.
~~~~~

Dollie married Orson Clements in Lodi, Wisconsin, on June 6, 1892. The couple’s witnesses were Dollie’s sisters, Rosa and Alice. Dollie would only be married to Orson for almost three years when he passed away. They had 2 children, Rilla and Rolland Clements.

~~~~~
After Orson passed away, Dollie married Billard Hall owner Ransom “Gib” Bartholomew on November 10, 1895. This marriage would not last long.
Wow! Dollie hired Robert La Follette to be her divorce lawyer. Robert is Ida Siebecker Pattison’s uncle and will have his own page in the future.
This next paragraph is info from Ransom’s obituary, discussing his and Dollie’s marriage.
~~~~~

On February 9, 1897, Rose A. Pattison, 21, married John H. Fess, 31, in Madison, Wisconsin.

~~~~~
(Picture year unknown)
Mary “Alice” married Harry J. Ewing of Baraboo, Wisconsin, on January 10, 1897, in Poynette, Wisconsin. Their witnesses were Alice’s sisters Hattie and Dollie and her brother-in-law Archie Kimball.
This marriage could not have lasted long.
Mary Alice married Robert Jason Wall* on August 4, 1899. Together they had two children, Robert Jason Jr and Gladys
Young Gladys Wall
Alice and Robert were married for almost 20 years before they divorced.
Both pictures are Robert & Alice Wall’s Daughter Glayds. Age unknown.
~~~~~

After Hattie and George were married, they bought and operated the Clements House Hotel from Alfred Clements and renamed it the Kimball Hotel. The Hotel during this era was known as a lively social center and travelers’ overnight stop.

This is a very interesting 1900 census. Edwin is 60 years old and is working as a horse trainer. It shows that Mary Jane had 9 children, and all 9 are alive here. Frank, George, Fred, and Charles are at home, and Frank is working on the farm. Mary Jane’s mother, Louisa [Cook] Rollins Northcutt, is living with them, and she had just lost her second husband, Benjamin Northcutt, less than a year before the census. It also shows that Mary Jane was Louisa’s only child.

In the Wisconsin 1905 census, Edwin is working as a Dairyman. Edwin and Mary Jane’s two grandchildren, Rilla and Rolland, lived with them. I’m not sure where their mother Dollie is? Louisa is living with them also. George is working as a Day Laborer, and Charles is in school.

This is very sad. I am looking for more information on Rose and why she was sent to an institution.

The Mendota Hospital had some questionable practices.

~~~~~
Sadly after 3 years of being institutionalized, Rose passed away at 38 years old. I cannot find any children born to her. She is buried with her parents and siblings at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Lodi, Wisconsin. She rests in plot T1-6-14-3
Fred Leslie joined the Army in January 1917. His registration card shows that he was living in Miles City, Montana, and was working as a waiter at the Jones Cafe on Main Street. He had brown eyes, dark brown hair, and a medium build.
Fred’s US Army Passenger list. August 31, 1918. He is listed as a Private for Base Hospital 81.
Fred sailed out of Hoboken, New Jersey, and landed in France.
The Leviathan has quite the WWI history. Below is a picture of the ship along with the Wikipedia description.
Fred was listed in the hospital registry. He served his military time working at Base Hospital 81 in France.
On March 20, 1919, Fred sailed home from Brest, France, on the U.S.S. President Grant.
He is on the casuals and wounded list. According to his sailing dates, it is possible he was on this ship when the picture was taken, coming into port on April 2, 1919. The war is over.
The picture is labeled; The ship that brought us home.
In Franks’s youth, he worked as a Stationary Engineer.
He used that talent to work at the Lewiston Brewery in Lewistown, Montana.
~~~~~

Mary Jane Rollins Pattison kept home and raised 9 children. She died May 5, 1920, after battling double pneumonia. Attending her funeral at her house was daughter Mrs. R Wall (Alice) and daughter (Gladys) of Evansville, IN, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pattison (Charles & Marguerite) of Harding, MT, Mr. Stiles (Dollie) of Denver, CO, Will Pattison of TX, and Frank Pattison of Lewistown, MT.

Hattie Louise Pattison Kimball in 1940. This is her great-nephew Gladdie. He was born in April 1939. Hattie lived with her nephew-in-law Aaron William Breithaupt during the 1940 census in Denver, Colorado, after her niece Gladys passed away sometime in 1939. Gladdie and his sister Marevlyn are Mary Alice’s grandchildren.

I had to do a few hours of research to make sure this was indeed Mary Alice and her daughter Gladys. Gladys married Aaron William Breithaupt somewhere around 1930-1931. They had 2 children, Marevlyn and Gladdie. Gladys may have died from complications from childbirth after her son Gladdie was born. Still looking for more information on Gladys’s death in 1939. What also threw me off is Alice’s middle name listed as “G”?? Misprints happen all the time, and people just leave them because of how expensive it is to change them. All dates and places match. Just looking for more of the story.

Charles “Charley” Agustus Pattison was married to Marguerite Holly from around 1912 to 1929. They had two children, Marguerite Francis, and Harry Leo. It looks like they divorced after their daughter Marguerite accidentally drowned at the age of 15. He was in the Merchant Marines during WWII. For several years, he owned a Cafe and Hotel in Hardin, MT. He worked in many hotels in the Northwest as a chef. In 1967 he retired and went back to live in Billings, MT.
